Day 94
1651 CUT
Luxury Liner Palatine

The jump was complete. Captain Remus had gotten used to watching the DRADIS screen light up with the other ships in the fleet. But this time there was a big problem.

"Oh gods!" he said quietly to himself. A sense of dread coming over him like a wave crashing down upon him. "I want a check on the DRADIS and FTL systems NOW!"

"What is it sir?" Co-Pilot Bacca responded.

"Look at the screen." Remus said pointing up

"Oh hell. What happened? There's just us and Morning Angel."

"Comm officer get me Captain Wilson on the line. I need to know if he's reading the same as us."

"Yes sir."

The bridge crew was starting to get nervous. They taken many jumps and the Captain hadn't acted like this since the Cylons first attacked.

"I have Morning Angel on the line."

"Good, maybe now we can get some godsdamned answers." Remus picking up the phone and began to speak. "Captain Wilson we're reading a problem on our DRADIS can you confirm? Are we the only to ships shown."

At that moment the bridge crew was overtaken by the same wave of fear. Only two ships meant no protection and the Cylons could strike anytime without warning. It could all be over very soon.

Captain Wilson responded to Remus's question "Uhhh Palatine we're reading the same. We seemed to have jumped without the rest of the fleet."

"Godsdamnit! What the frak is going on." Remus whispered to himself. "Can we at least get a fix on our possition."

"Checking...Star charts indicate that we're...heading in the oposite direction.

Day 94
(1651) CUT
Luxury Liner Palatine

"What do you mean "opposite direction?" Captain Remus asked with a mixture of frustration and confusion.

"I don't know how to explain it but it seems we're at a location the fleet had been to previously."

"That's not possible. Helmsman are you sure you set the right coordinates?" Remus barked

"Yes sir!" was the reply.

Remus lay his hands firmly on top of the consoles as if bracing himself. "Then I want a full diagnostic on the nav computer. There has to be an explanation for all of this."

So far no one on the bridge had openly expressed fear or anxiety at the situation but it was obvious that they all felt the same way. Trapped in the vast surrounding embrace of empty space. Their only companion was their unofficial "buddy system" vessel the Morning Angel.

Without warning the comm line to the bridge beeped.

"Gods damnit! Now what!?"

The Comms Officer relayed that a passenger wanted to talk to the captain. Remus picked up the phone and greeting the caller.

"This is the captain how may I help you?"

"Captain I'm in the Casino and the passengers are quite concerned about not seeing any of the fleet. They've already begun formulating theories and rumors are starting to spread."

"Keep a lid on it as long as you can. I'll have Security Chief Antaeus go down there and help calm things down."

"Thank you sir." With that Remus hung up.

"What's the status of the Nav computer?"

"Appears to be functioning properly."

"Appears" is not good enough I need a definite yes or no."

"Working on it sir."

In the security office Chief Antaeus was finally getting rid of all the clutter "those pseudo-government types" had left. One thing is for certain. He was back in charge of his ship again. "Thought those stiff suited blowhards would never leave" he muttered to himself. As he went about his work Chief Antaeus was informed he was needed in the casino.

Minutes later both Captain Remus and Chief Antaeus were standing in the Casino. It was located at within the forward section of the ship, above the passenger suites.

"Chief we need to calm these people down. Start with the passengers on the far side of the room. I work around here."

During the next half hour the two men did their best at rumor control, claiming it was a simple malfunction in the ship's nav system and should be repaired soon. That the Libra would have sent out Search and Rescue teams. They should be found soon and the problem solved. All of a sudden a flash of light could be seen in the windows. A moment later the two vessels flashed into a different region. It looked like to bright flash lights shining for a brief moment and then going out.

"What the frak is going on!?" Captain Remus said with a mixture of annoyance and confusion. Walking over to the nearest phone he called the bridge.

"What is going on up there. I gave no order to jump?"

Bacca replied with an ominous tone "That's just it sir...no one did. Both vessels just jumped on their own."

"What do you mean "on their own?"

"The FTL system has activated by itself and preliminary reports say we've gone backwards again."

"FTL Navigational Computers DO NOT activate by themselves!" Captain Remus yelled into the phone.
Forgetting that passengers would likely hear him.

"I can't explain it any other way sir." Bacca replied in an apologetic tone.

"Find a way godsdamnit!" Remus hung up in disgust. He looked back towards the room and saw his security chief walking towards him.

Security Chief Antaeus had heard the end of the conversation and he thought most others in the room did as well. Hearing that the FTL drive seemed to be operating on it's own would cause a panic on already frightened passengers. The situation had already deteriorated significantly with just the rumor that they'd missed an FTL jump. So far the word around the ship was a simple miscalculation. It had been a satisfactory explanation at prevented further problems. There was no telling what would happen if this new information became widespread. Their current location could be the least of their problems unless the problem was either resolved or contained.

"Captain the passengers are already frightened enough. I'm hoping what I just heard was out of anger."

"It's not," Remus said with a disappointed tone. "The FTL drive seems to be activating by itself. I don't understand. It doesn't make any sense." His words were of confusion.

"Sir, I suggest you return to the bridge. I'll stay here and smooth things over and tell the passengers there was a misunderstanding. That the FTL system is fine and that we're trying to find the Fleet."

Captain Remus reluctantly agreed and left the room. He did so just in time as his personal nemesis Aneta Costel began to walk over. Likely with another tirade on how things were not the her high society standards. She was considered attractive but her attitude quickly poisoned most potential connections with other people.

"What is the meaning of this security chief? What did the captain mean when he said the engines are operating on their own? Why have we not rejoined the fleet?"

"We're doing the best we can ma'am. The drives are malfunctioning and the engineering staff is working on the problem. We expect to have things under control soon," Vincent replied.

"How soon?" Aneta asked with a tone of rising aggravation.

"I don't have an exact time. It all depends on what's wrong."

"It seems to me that someone is not doing their job. Tell those over payed wrench monkeys to do their jobs."

"I will inform them of exactly that."

Aneta seemly satisfied for now walked away. To those who had been on the receiving end of her bad side knew her she came and went as if sent by Hades himself. A few passengers had complained since the Palatine's voyage had begun, but so far nothing that would allow confinement. However a few had commented that if only being a bitch was a crime. She seemed to take most of her frustrations out on the captain. Probably because he was in charge of the ship and in her own brand of logic if something was wrong he must have had something to do with it.

Security Chief Antaeus wondering if this was just the beginning of a larger problem with the passengers. Mass panic would overtake them if the problem was not resolved soon and they still had many more questions than answers.

Day 94
1721 CUT
Passenger Starliner Morning Angel

The situation on board was much more tense. Confined to a much smaller space the passengers had little to do. Rumors had been
spreading since the FTL jump which separated the two ships from the rest of the fleet. At first everyone had assumed it was a simple malfunction. But this had quickly given way to some confusion that Palatine was with them as well. Two ships having the same problem was less likely than just one.

Some of the passengers thought that there was an effort to spread the ships over a wider area to prevent having such a large single target for the Cylons to track. That more ships would be joining them. After the second jump this idea all but dissipated.

All aboard had wondered when a SAR team from the Libra would find them. Now that they were even further out the question became more of "if they were found." Some had been begun to panic. Others prayed to the Gods for help.

There had been much discussion between some of the crew and Robert Exter, the ship's owner. So far none of them seemed to have any answers.

Day 94
1731 CUT
Luxury Liner Palatine
Shuttle Bay

Lt. Samuel Bowers, callsign Dragoon, was inspecting and cataloging the gear within the Raptor used to carry himself over to Palatine. Just standard equipment. No fancy "get us the frak out of this mess" tools or "fixitol pills." He made it his primary task to assess what was available since the FTL problem seemed to be more than just a mix up. He was confused as the rest. Why was it happening, and with two ships. There was something very unusual going on.

Samuel hadn't gotten much sleep since things started. The Raptor was now the only armed craft in this unfortunate splinter fleet and he had to be on guard, if only to recieve messages on a military frequency. But the SAR teams would likely be transmitting on a civilian one. As far as he knew he was the only Colonial Fleet member aboard either ship. A courier run had brought him on board only a few minutes before things SNAFUed. Although admittedly he had not checked to see if there were others.

A mechanic spoke to him as he walked by. "Hey, lieutenant anything there that can help us out of this mess?"

"Just standard stuff," he replied.

"No Virgon Brew then?"

"No, I wish," Samuel replied with a laugh.

Samuel had gone to the bridge when it became apparent that there was a problem. However the coordinates that would take them back to the fleet were not accessible and the Raptor wouldn't have them either. The worst part was even the ship's computer techs couldn't unlock the FTL system. It was as if someone rewritten the code and no one was admitting it.

Out in space a single brilliant flashes burst forth and then disapated to reveal the unmistakable form of a Cylon Raider. Samuel's portable comm device the security team had given him loudly made it's existence known. "Lieutenant we have a DRADIS contact and it's a Cylon! We need your help!" Springing into action Samuel jumped into the pilot's seat and ran down the departure procedures. Lastly he secured his helmet, informed the bridge he was ready to go and requested departure clearance.

The Raptor sped out into space in search of it's target. The Raider apeared on DRADIS with double beep sound. Samuel pulled up on the stick to get himself in line with the enemy. The craft was streaking in but still some distance away from either ship. It's red eye moving side to side. It gave the apearance of a predatory bird swooping down on it's prey. Up until a couple days ago Samuel had been a Viper pilot on the Douglas J. Griffyn. Part of VP 130 the "Stallions." He would preferred his Viper but in these hard times you worked with what you had. As luck would have it the craft held enough to deal with the Cylon threat.

Two missiles streaked out from the Raider, intent on disabling Palatine. Samuel sped forward and took a position between it and the incoming targets. Giving a little more speed he launched a few counter measures to attract the missiles. One took the bait and exploded harmlessly. The other was on target to Palatine and heading straight for the FTL drives.

"Oh frak, not good!" Samuel said in a panic. Making as quick a turn as the craft would allow he hoped there was enough time. He had a full view of the ship. It's bright dome bringing light to the otherwise darkness of space. Samuel felt like he could sense the passengers and crew pleading for him to save them. Going full speed he managed to catch up to and pass the missile. Quickly hitting the counter measures again they spewed forth, but the missile ignored them. It was almost there. One last try forced the missile off course. It missed it's target but slammed into another part of the ship. The section that connected the dome to the passenger and crew sections.

A look of grim determination came over Samuel. "Ok motherfraker, now you're really going to pay!"

He maneuvered the Raptor towards the incoming Raider and it did it's best to comply. Finally he was in line with the target. As ever the red eye moved side to side. This time as if issuing a challenge to the other pilot. It was now or never. In the head to head fight there could be only one victor. Samuel squeezed off as many rounds at the Raider. He felt like his own force of will went with them. In the heat of the moment during what seemed like an eternity the bullets whizzed towards their target. One or more finally found their mark and the Raider exploded. Samuel cheered with raised fist. It was over. Somehow the task was done. Both ships were safe, but the were likely some casualties.

Samuel opened a comm channel, "Palatine target is eliminated. Requesting landing clearance." Through the comm cheers could be heard. Captain Remus happily replied. "Clearance given and thank you!" The Raptor landed safely in the shuttle bay and Samuel removed his helmet.

Day 94
Time Unknown
Cylon Baseship

"Frak!" a Number One model yelled as he took his hand off the console. "One of our scouts almost had them! Neither ship was armed and it barely damaged either!" He stormed away, furious at the failure.

Day 94
1800 CUT
Luxury Liner Palatine

Nine minutes ago as expected both Palatine and Morning Angel had mysteriously jumped. It occurred as if like clockwork.
Every thirty minutes another jump backwards. So far no one could figure out why. Even more confusing was a complete lockout of the FTL system. Preventing alteration or correction. Even attempts to rewrite the code were blocked. Deep concerns had begun to emerge amongst the bridge crew, especially Captain Remus. This view was also shared with Security Chief Antaeus.

Damage control crews scrambled to assess the damage to the Mall area caused by the raider's missile hit. Lives had been lost and the survivors in that section considered themselves lucky.

Lt. Samuel Bowers was called a hero for his defense of both ships. Many thanked the Gods and saw his unlikely presence there a sign of their protection. After landing in the hanger he'd instinctively asked for a damage report and was dismayed to hear of the loss of life. As Samuel stood by the hanger's observation he quietly blamed himself for not doing a better job.

The general feeling of the passengers was one of moderate panic. How could the Cylons have found them? Rumors had begun and security personnel were doing their best to dispel them. Saying that what was known so far was that it was only two raiders and they'd both been destroyed.

Breaking the Samuel's silent contemplation of events a female voice called out "Thank you for saving us sir." He turned around and Sarah Exter was there. "You're welcome ma'am. I just wish I'd done better." Walking towards him Sarah replied, "You did your best and saved many lives. That's all anyone can ask. Yet it is sad to know we lost anyone." The two stood side by side looking out at the stars.
