[With Goldwolf]

Banished, and in their exile
they learn, they live, and more.
Their gods they now revile,
and unleash the dogs of war.

- Taurean poet Mida Ulbrecht

Previously on Battlestar Libra

A hiatus in the fight. Libra’s small fleet rests and heals… Some seek reassurance in the gods, and find doubt instead. Others find love where they least expect it: in the arms of the enemy. Hope is a precious commodity in times of war, to be grabbed when found…

But is there hope for humanity? Can the members of the fleet set aside their personal interests and conceits to work together for the common good? Or are the children of the Lords of Kobol too flawed to deserve salvation?

Buster and Gia walked into the "dressing room" - the conference room usually used as a classroom was an organized chaos of outfits and props for the recital.

"Oh, this is so much fun! It's been ages since I've seen a recital!" Gia gushed, "Everyone is so excited! Even Mr. Kalrk and Ms. D'Argent are looking forward to it!"

“WHAT?” Hunt demanded. “People are going to be watching?” He started to panic. I can’t let them see me, no way, no—

But then Buster had him by the shoulders, holding him against the bulkhead. "Calm down, Hunt! Breathe in and out. Slowly. That's better."

Gia looked at them curiously, "But I thought everyone knew..." Buster raised one eyebrow and she shut up. He turned his attention back to Hunt. "Okay, Hunt, here's the deal: you guys have worked hard to prepare this, you know it because you've worked as hard as everyone else. Things have been pretty dismal since the attack, the crew needs a break, some distraction, and the professor thought you guys were good enough to provide that distraction. Between you and me, I think he wants to show you guys off - he's very proud of how much you have accomplished." He paused to look Hunt intently, "You can do this, Hunt. It's just a little show, and it means the world to the professor."

Hunt breathed in deeply. “Frakking hell, I can’t, I—,” he swallowed hard. He clenched his jaw, then relaxed it with an effort. “Okay,” he finally said. “I told you I’d work hard. I can do this.”

He swallowed again; Buster released him, and he squared his shoulders, nodding to Buster.

+++++++

Professor Karl Mueller stepped on the stage, adjusted his necktie and addressed the audience: “Dear friends, our ancestors developed the theater as a means to entertain and educate. As a student, and teacher, of ancient literature, I’ve had the opportunity of enjoying in my mind’s eye the beauty and majesty of the ancient epics. Today, we will have the rare opportunity to see one such epic performed, much as it would have been done in olden times. It is The Minotaurensea, by the Geminese poet Valerious. Ilka and Clive Brown will chant the epic in the original language, while Else and Hunt present various scenes. For your convenience, I have made copies of the translation,” he nodded to Rusty, who began distributing the papers to those present, “but you will see that you can follow the action just from the acting and the song… and some recollection of your school lessons!” He stood aside with a theatrical wave of his hand, “And now, The Minotaurensea!”

Clive and Ilka walked onstage and stood by the left side; she was wearing a draped gown of purest white, while Clive wore a white shirt and dark trousers. She looked nervously at her mother, who smiled with pride, and to Aunt Xenthais, who gave her an exaggerated wink. Finally, her eyes rested on her father; he nodded solemnly, and she began to sing of ancient kings and vengeful gods.

Hunt stood absolutely still, except for his eyes. His gaze flickered from the audience to Ilka (carefully avoiding looking at Clive) to the Professor and around again. His heart thudded in his chest so hard he was sure Else could hear it. Else nudged him softly on the ribs and mouthed, “Ready?” And then she strode onstage, all assurance and bravado.

The first scene was by the seashore: Else, as King Minos, beseeched the god Poseidon for a worthy sacrifice to Zeus. Hunt, standing on a box decorated to resemble waves, made a noticeably nervous Poseidon, but still he waved his hand at the appropriate time for Rusty to push in a white bull, exquisitely and anatomically correctly painted on cardboard.

The next scene had Else, this time as Pasiphae, plotting with Daedalus, a somewhat more relaxed Hunt, as to how to consummate her lust for the bull.

And so it went, Ilka’s and Clive’s voices weaving the magic tale as Hunt and Else changed outfits and backdrops to act it up.

The production was amateur and the actors less than accomplished, but the music was beautiful and the kids had obviously put a lot of work into it, so the audience got caught up in the drama and enjoyed it. So much so that they all gasped when, in the crucial scene when Theseus turns the slain Minotaur, Hunt’s Minotaur mask was gone, replaced by a mask that was the face of Else, as Theseus.

And then it was over. Ilka’s mournful notes lingered as Else’s Theseus walked away, marked by the blood of the Minotaur (tomato sauce thinned with water, courtesy of Gia).

The audience clapped with appreciation, and the performers took their bows.

Hunt felt like he’d been beaten up; he decided he’d rather get beaten up for real than to do something like this again. He’d enjoyed doing the painting, though. Maybe if the Prof got a crazy ideal like this again, he’d let Hunt to the art stuff and stay behind the scenes.

Ilka was glad it was over; she didn’t mind doing it, but she was self-conscious about singing in public, particularly since Mr. Kalrk and Ms. D’Argent were present. Else was delighted, more so because Hunt had painted her! Her face was in the mask that Hunt wore, and she couldn’t wait to ask him for it, to keep it with her treasured possessions.

Previously on Battlestar Libra....

A Cylon virus in the Griffyn's Missile batteries, and a team assigned to rid them of it had turned into a Caffeine induced snort-fest. But the job was done, and missile batteries were now virus free. Missile tests will begin shortly.

Four launch tubes in the starboard pod are still down, but are going under repairs.

Romance? The possibility of romance has been little to nothing since the attacks. The crew is feeling emotionally drained and utterly empty. Turning to coffee has helped some of them get along, but where else will they find relief???

Liza Liala, CBI
Granduer
Day 16, 1700

Nothing of note had occured, the last few days. No new crimes had been comitted, and, annoying, no new information had been found. They had finally finished sorting through the crew files and the passenger files, and found....nothing. At night, she was still haunted, by the fall of the Colonies, the deaths of the government, and what she had heard....and haunted now in addition by the doubts the Chaplain had placed in her mind, concerning the Gods. As such, she had taken to sleeping a bit at a time, in spurts, rather than trying for one long stretch that would let her dream...

....and she had taken to "other" activities as well....as was evidenced by the man lying shirtless beside her on the bed, both of them catching a short nap.

She rolled out of bed, and touched his shoulder, trying to wake him.

"Huh? Wha--"

"Get dressed, please. I'm going to meet with the Captain....update him on our progess, ask him a few questions. He may have an airtight alibi for the sabotage, but he could've been in on the murder...Need to find out where he was then. Should update him on the rest of it, as well. Given his....inane inadaptability....the last time we spoke, I'd like to have you there, if possible. He seems to speak only one 'language'--that of his life as Captain, pre-attacks, and all that came with it. Good to have a 'translator' around, if you know what I mean....?"

Previously on “Battlestar Libra”…

1. After his failure to conduct a proper interrogation of a suspected Cylon collaborator, Patrick Cardelli begins to question his ability to manage people.

2. Upon hearing that Evaristo Miller is quite possibly innocent, Patrick decides to switch gears and slow down for a bit. Both he and Sadie hop aboard their Raptor and head over to the Palatine for a day off consisting of lunch and a walk in the park.

3. A security officer in the Cardelli Corporation takes a temporary leave from his duties on Hades Horn in order to contact Liza Liala on the Grandeur. He does not return to his job and it takes several days before anyone notices.

4. Finally, setting up shop aboard the Necromancer proves to be just a starting point for Mason Cardelli. Knowing that his employees do hard, brutal work with heavy equipment in risky environments he realizes that they will need regular vacation schedules set up.

a. In an effort to give something in order to get something, Mason circulates a memo to all ship Captains requesting that they send him any criminals that they catch and do not want to deal with.

b. His offer is a sincere attempt to establish a department of corrections and enforce good behavior throughout the fleet. Those who misbehave will simply be reassigned to the Necromancer[i] or [i]Hades Horn as temporary mine workers to replace vacationing ones – term of sentence to be determined by a legal process.

c. The memo is also tactless and more than a little over the top… just like the Cardelli Corporation.

Astral Dawn's Security Chief Jonathan Willborn escorted Liza Liala, Director of Colonial Bureau of Intelligence, to the space park Grandeur, to investigsate the sabotage of the FTL system. On the space park, Liala hired Willborn as her Deputy Director

"Safety in numbers, eh?" Willborn rolled over onto his back. "Fear not, Milady, I'll be right behind you."

Previously on Battlestar Libra…

Maj Eric Riley had witnessed Commander Rodrigues interrogate Specialist Hans Dean, who was the elusive saboteur that had caused the CAG’s death. Dean had insisted he was a cylon, the genuine article—flesh and blood, not metal. The commander had killed Dean and ordered an autopsy.

Later, Rodrigues showed Riley the anonymous note that appeared in Col Vance’s pocket:

Quote:
Commander, how did cylons get humans to agree to collaborate?
How many humans were there?
Not many. very few.
What the fleet is experiencing is the next step in evolution in cylons.
biological cylons.
Are all humans good? Of course not.
Not all cylons are demons.
I am a cylon. I am not a demon.
I did not destroy the colonies.
There is a cylon on Grandeur who is a demon.
Look for identical twins.
There are only 12 cylon models.
But many copies.

So when the Major saw what appeared to be Dean’s identical twin on the Palatine, he took action right away.

Maj Eric Riley and Lt Mark Chandler, in the gym on the Palatine

Riley bent and picked up a hand dumbbell, stepping silently up behind the attendant. Just as he lifted the dumbbell to strike, the attendant turned…

…and with extraordinary speed and strength, blocked Riley’s blow, leaping at the Marine, driving him backwards. Riley’s head hit one of the supports for the leg press machine and he collapsed limply.

Chandler was already moving, grabbing the attendant’s hair and arm, bodily picking him up and smashing his head against the leg press frame. Inexplicably, it seemed to have little effect on the smaller man. He twisted out of Chandler’s grip, pulling the Viper pilot over his head, then he had his hands around Chandler’s neck.

Chandler tried to twist to one side to get out of the chokehold, but it didn’t work. He pulled at the attendant’s wrists without success—the man was supernaturally strong. Chandler was a big man, strongly muscled, but his efforts had no effect.

His vision started to darken…

…and then the grip on his throat eased; he gasped for breath, his vision clearing.

Riley stood above him and the unconscious attendant, pale and swaying, his eyes unfocused. But in his right hand he gripped the dumbbell. There was blood on it.

“Call security,” Riley growled.

“Call security,” Riley growled.

Lt. Chandler moved with surprising speed and agility for a man his size; after making sure the attendant was out for the count, he grabbed the gym's courtesy handheld and asked to speak with the Security Director, "Tell him there was an assault on two officers by a staff member."

He then returned to Riley and the unconscious attendant. "I don't believe we've met," he told the Marine major, extending his hand, "Lt. Mark Chandler, lately of Delphinus and now Libra. Care to tell me what this is all about?"

Kalrk, President and CEO of K Industries, has survived the cylon attacks on the Colonies, and was instrumental is saving a number of civilian ships, thanks to his armed private vessel, Mercurius.

His greatest secret, is that he is a cylon himself: a secret that he has shared with his bodyguard, Corporal Psyche D'Argent, the woman he loves.

Kalrk had no problem following the original language.. but he did peek at his handout, for the benefit of the humans around him.

Kalrk even mumbled part of the songs very quietly along with Clive and Ilka, but not for long, as he received a friendly kick under the table from Psy.

Quote:

Kalrk didn't gasp with the others; he knew what was coming.

But he did flinch when the face of the minotaur was revealed to be Theseus, Else Mueller, in this case.

When the applause had died down, and Kalrk had applauded, when people were milling around, Kalrk said to Professsor Mueller, "I'd like to discuss the epic with you, professor, after I've congratulated the performers."

Professor Karl Mueller, the husband of Demeter's Captain Inga Mueller, had been teaching his daughters Ilka and Else and the young stowaway, Hunt, the myth of the Minotaur. Inspired by their enthusiasm, he suggested they present the epic as a recital to the crew and their new friends, Kalrk and Ms. D'Argent.

Quote:

"Well, Kalrk, Ms. D'Argent, I trust you enjoyed the children's performance of that beautiful epic poem. And please, call me Karl - my wife and Xenthais cannot speak highly enough of you!"

Day 16
1000 CUT
Cylon Occupied Picon

Two days. Two days since he found the centurians.

Hitting them with a rocket head on wasn't the smartest thing Marcus had ever done. But he wasn't a warrior and it didn't come as a surprise now that he'd thought of it.

It was sixteen days and he'd seen just the six centurians. Why were there just six of them. There must be more. In case of any other resistance. Marcus thought he might be the only one. But he hadn't seen anyone else. He still had hope...for now.

Why were the centurians blackened on the sides. Had they been in an explosion? Marcus hadn't thought of it at the time but he thought now that there must be resistance somewhere else on the planet. He had to find them.

Any other resistance must be somewhere else since they hadn't been here. Maybe there was a large group of them and they could fight the cylons in a way that had effect.

Marcus felt he wasn't doing any good. Six centurians in sixteen days wasn't enough. They'd just be rebuilt and then he'd have to start all over.

Marcus was sitting on the edge of the bed. He'd unable to sleep well since he found the raptor. He was having trouble and was tired. He got up and started his day.

A nice shower and shave to start the day. Wash away any problems. At least for a little while.

After finishing everything and getting on his way. He took a different route. This time instead of continuing where he found the centurians he went down another path. He was still driving and he'd soon wise he hadn't taken this way. He wish he never saw it or what it contained.

He knew there was a lake around there now that he'd seen the area and looked at a map. Maps don't show everything and he'd wish he'd seen this on the map so he 'd know not to come up here.

Upon reaching the final hill before the lake he noticed it was 1700. Soon he'd have to turn back or spend the night out in the Piconian winter. That would make what he'd see worse and drive him further to insanity.

After he reached the top of the hill he saw the lake...then he saw what was in it.

Jumping out of the transport and running to the lake as fast as he could, a look of dispair on his face, he saw it was what he was affraid of. Bodies...a lot of them. Some frozen almost completly in the water. Hands sticking out. Some on the surface face down. There was one face up. A look of terror on his frozen face. This is what Marcus felt inside now. Like the cylons were nearby and hadn't attacked yet.

Marcus looked out from the right side of the lake to the left. Frozen in place with terror. He was alone. At this lake of death. And nothing would change that. He dropped to his knees and cried.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 16
1000 CUT
Civilian Starliner Morning Angel

The start of another day.

Ivan Wilson sat in the cockpit. Just like he'd done the past 15 days.

His engineer was back and he'd had him look over the electrical system. Everything was fine so Wilson had him working on something else. The engines again. "At least he had something to do" Wilson thought. "I have to sit here."

Dorian Vorenus was helping Annika with pasenger questions. He'd been helping them since last night. Wilson thought it was partly to be with Annika. He was right but approved. "We need things like that to happen if the race is to survive" Wilson thought.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Day 18
1000 CUT
Luxury Liner Palatine

Camilla Fauns was having a day off. She started the day at the pool. Eyes closed and arms stretched out she floated in the middle. No one was there yet and she wanted to make us of the time. Later she'd make use of the steam room.

Most of the senior staff had the day off. All except the Captain and Security Chief. Security was tighter now and they were all out and posted at the doors of all sensitive areas. They might be only security officers but they were all they had.

Christine Minos the Jr. Security Chief was her usual self. But this time she was more driven than before. She wanted to get to the bottom of this crisis.

"They are both very warm and hospitable." Kalrk said to te patriarch.
"The poem, Karl,.. why do you suppose the people labeled the Minotaur a monster, when all he did was what they created him as. They put all the blame on the Minotaur."

"Ah yes, Kalrk, the Minotaur is as much a victim as a monster. And even its monstruous existence is not of his own making, but rather the fruit of man's folly and ingenuity. Much like cylons, when you think about it... Reminds you of the old adage, does it not, 'It all has happened before, and will happen again'."

"Indeed it does, Karl." Kallrk replied, then he seemed more serious.

"Suppose if the Minotaur had chosen to be different than how he was created, intended. Suppose... suppose the Minotaur chose to eat fruit and vegetables at the table, instead of accepting the horrific offerings from the humans. How do you think the humans would react to this self-changed Minotaur?"

"That's an interesting question, Kalrk. I suppose some would accept it, after some trepidation, of course! Others would not be able to see past the monstruous visage... Then again, the Minotaur is a device to project our own beastly nature onto another, a separate being, so that we may, in battling it, defeat the evil within... The myth can be read many ways, Kalrk; I have been a student of ancient literature for years, and still I find new meaning and nuances every time I read the old epics..."
