Cylons.

Every mind in the fleet was thinking of the cylons. After all, it was only three weeks ago that the death machines had attacked and destroyed the civilization of the twelve Colonies. When would they strike next?

Some in the fleet knew that the cylons had “evolved” into biological form, nearly indistinguishable from humans.

One bio-cylon was discovered and killed on Libra.

One was discovered and killed on Grandeur.

One was found on Palatine and taken to Libra for study.

One was on Perseus.

How many were in the fleet? What were they planning?

And as this remnant of Humanity, this “fleet”, wondered about the next attack by the cylons, it was not considering that death could come from other sources, even natural ones.

One such source was now to take the forefront: disease.

Fernanda Bello rushed to the bridge. "Captain! Please patch me to Libra's Medical! The baby is sick, and it could be contagious!"

Commander, over the past day we have noticed a decrease in the energy of our medical team, and several crew members have reported flu-like symptoms. Blood-work is being tested right now, and we will know for sure within the next two hours if this is truly the flu.

Commander, due to our current conditions of being cooped up in small quarters, this presents an enormous risk to the crew and the civilians. The pattern of infection seems to be following the route of an airborne virus sir.

At the moment, the two worst cases are of Lt Alex Guiles and Lt Jenny McDonnel, two of our Raptor pilots.

Sir, I recommend that we quarantine the Libra, and that all incoming and departing traffic be suspended until we know for sure what the virus is.

Gunnery Sergeant Razorski

Razorski and her Marines had searched the entire ship; after the drills, they all knew the ship’s layout as well as the original designers. The escaped cylon collaborator was nowhere to be found.

It frustrated her. She ordered the jarheads to search again.

And on top of that, Maj Riley had pulled her aside and mentioned the possibility of some sort of virus going around. Quickly she reviewed what she’d seen of the troops, but couldn’t pinpoint anything specific. The drills had worn them all out…

She turned down the next passageway, stopping to check each of the compartments she passed.

CPO Alexandra MacLean

Mac rested her elbow on the worktable and leaned her forehead into her palm. She’d been tired almost constantly since the first day of the attacks, but now she was feeling… really tired. And she kept on feeling like she needed to cough.

“Frak,” she sighed.

She heard Specialist Chang, working on the Viper nearby, sneeze violently several times, then cough and sniff.

Mac got up and stretched, feeling a little stiff, and went to check to make sure the air scrubbers were working all right. Maybe some fuel fumes or something had gotten into the air on the deck.

She was lying in bed, wearing, unfortunatly, her nightgown and robe, still--Her suit wouldn't fit over the cast on her right arm, that covered her arm from fingers to above the elbow. With her left hand, she closed the file she had been (messily, being right handed) writing in left-handed, before replying.

"Send them in please."

A man and woman entered Liza Liala's room. They were in their early 60's?

"Hello?' The woman said as they were only in the doorframe. "Director Liala? We're Tristan and Nona Willborn; Jonathan's parents."

Day 21
1019 CUT
Perseus

It had been a good day so far for Doc Walters, nobody had died, they had even been able to let several of their patients out if their beds for the first time today, his team was working together exceptionally good and over dinner, he planned to meet Cole and the lovely Dr. Vaillant.
Thinking about those, they had seemed awfully close for Doctor and Patient, but in a situation like this, We should take everything we can while we can...Walters mused.
And Cole should be glad I'm not thirty years younger, cause that Dr. Vaillant is one hell of a woman...

But Walters musing about what he might have done were cut short when one of his nurses knocked on the wall next to the open door to his office.
"Doctor, Lieutenants Myers and Schaefer, a Raptor Pilot and an ECO are reporting with flu symptoms."

"I'll be right there..." Looks like I jinxed it....

When he entered the part of the sickbay that was reserved for posssibly infectious ilnesses, like flu, the two Lt.'s were sitting on a cot and neither of them was looking exactly healthy. And after first examination, Doc Walters wasjust issuing the meds when he overheard Lt. Myers whisper to his ECO "You heard about Timmy, the stocky Marine guy who was in the gym with us last week....He has it too, but even worse as far as I know...."

And louder the Lt. asked the Doctor "Hey Doc, would it be possible to get me a bigger package of these meds? Just to be on the safe side...."

Walters sighed again. It had been such a good day!

"I just heard that thing about your friend, if he's sick, he should come here, where I can help him. And you, Lt Myers, should know better that to get meds for your friend, that's my job."

I hope these guys are the only ones...can't say I have truckloads of these meds here....

Demeter, earlier on D 21

0500

Ferdie woke to a frantic knock on her door. She put on a robe and opened it, to find a disheveled Buster ready to knock again. “Ferdie! You have to come, the baby’s sick!”

She rushed behind him to Buster and Gia’s quarters. Gia was seating on their bed, the baby holding fast to her breast. “Sh!” she whispered, “she just fell asleep.”

The baby’s hair was plastered to her head, and she whimpered like a newborn kitten in her restless sleep. Gia didn’t look much better.

“What happened?” Ferdie whispered back, “She was fine last night.”

“She was waking up every 2 hours, like the doctor said, but then around 2am she started getting fussy and wouldn’t eat. I thought it was the excitement of the day catching up with her, all the changes, so we took turns carrying her. At first she’d fall asleep, but then she started crying and wouldn’t stop. And now she has a fever, Ferdie!” Gia’s soft voice was shaking with worry, “she’s burning up! What can we do?”

As if on cue, Zoe began to whimper again, her little body squirming in her sleep.

Ferdie touched her brow. “Yes, she’s got a temperature, but I need to get the thermometer to find out how bad it is.” She glanced at her sister’s distraught face, “Don’t worry too much, Gia. Babies are stronger than we think. And at that age they can’t regulate their body temperature well yet, so sometimes their temperatures go up and down…” She didn’t add that a high fever at that age could also have terrible long-term consequences. “Right now, we need to get it down, though. I’ll be right back.”

A short time later she returned with the thermometer and bottle of children’s analgesic.

“103… Let’s give her a few drops of analgesic and wipe her body with wet cloths to get her temperature down. Gia, did you notice anything else?”

“She has sneezed a few times. The doctor at the Libra said it was probably my perfume…”

“It’s okay, sis. I’m going to go get dressed now, bring you some food. It’s probably just a little cold. Nothing to worry about…”.

"Hello?' The woman said as they were only in the doorframe. "Director Liala? We're Tristan and Nona Willborn; Jonathan's parents."

Liza Liala frantically tried to one-handedly pull the blankets up a little higher, to hide her current rather pathetic attire, but all she managed to do was tangle them, and so she gave up.

"Please...come in."

"We don't want to take too much of your time." Mrs Willborn said, as she and her husband approacded Liala's bedside. "Jonathan told us all about you, and we just had to meet you." The woman was beaming with joy.

"Nice to meet you." Mr. Willborn said nervously. He was not comfortable being in the room.

Liala sensed the man was ill at ease, and wondered why....

"Please" she said to both of them, gesturing at the armchairs nearby "Sit down."

Mr. Willborn took a seat, while Mrs. Willborn practically rushed to Liala's side. "My dear... you've broken your arm! Jonathan didn't tell us that! How did it happen? It must have been on Grandeur when you were in that top secret mission, wasn't it?"

“Nona, please." her husband pleaded from his seat.

Liza Liala resisted the urge to raise an eyebrow....They were so....different...from each other, it seemed, the husband and wife.

"Yes. It happened on the Granduer. I'll be fine."
Despite her words, she was still swearing silently inside her head over the entire ordeal....She couldn't wait to get the damn thing off, but according to the doctors, that wouldn't be for another two months.

"Well, don't you worry. I'll take good care of you." Mrs. Willborn promised. "Any friend of Jonathan's is...well... I'll take good care of you."

"Ms. Liala. Director." Mr. Willborn began. "Our visit is not Jonathan's idea. Believe me; he doesn't know we're here."

"That's true." Nona said. "Jonathan wanted to introduce us formally, but when I heard you had been somehow hurt.. I just couldn't wait for him to tell us the time."

Something inside her relaxed, around Nona....she wondered what exactly was going on....she couldn't recall ever feeling quite like that before.

"Thank you." She turned to Mr. Willborn next, with a smile on her face....and noted he still seemed tense. "Are you alright, Mister Willborn?"

"Me? I'm fine.' he answered, confused by the question. "You're the woman who gets an unexpected visit by her..well.. by us."

She let her smile widen slightly, into a brief grin. "Don't worry about that. I'm perfectly accustomed to the unexpected. And at least this time, it isn't trying to kill me."

"Oh my." Nona exclaimed. "'We're certainly not here to do that, or to make you feel nervous, in any way. Are we, Tristan?"

"No, Nona." he said to his wife.

Turning back to Liala, Nona Willborn continued. "You take it easy, and let me take care of everything. It can't be easy for a woman to do things with only one arm."

"I..errr...." the Director had been planning to protest, but, for some reason, found that she could not....and much to her shock and bewilderment, wasn't even sure she wanted to "...Thank you."

"That's quite all right, dear." Nona said cheerfully. “After everything Jonathan's told us about you.. maybe you'd like to tell us about Jonathan. Does he take care of himself? Did he get proper rest, or was he all business?"

"Nona, please." Tristan implored her. "You'll embarrass her… and Jonathan.”

Although Liala had been grateful for the woman's early conversation--and touched by her offers of care and support--at this moment, she was grateful to Mr. Willborn, for stopping that particular line of questioning......and she figured the best way to put an end to it for good would be to allow them to observe her interacting with their son.

"Would you both perhaps like to join us here in my cabin, for dinner tonight?"

"That would be lovely!" Nona Willborn gushed. "And if you'd like, I can do your hair..but only if you would like some help. I'm not trying to pry or to smother you. It's just… Jonathan is my baby, and from what he's told us… you're very special to him."

Day 21,
1049 CUT
Perseus

In Perseus CIC, Colonel Richard Cole was counting the seconds. Not that he didn't like his job or his people in CIC, oh no, far from it...but today was the day he and Sarah would have the first session in which he would be allowed to use both eyes at once, and that made Cole nervous.

It's not like something could go wrong...but why does it feel like it?

Behind him, Lt. McDonnel, Perseus tactical officer, suddenly sneezed.

"You alright Lt.?" Cole asked.

"Yes Sir. Seem to be developing a flu or something, felt 'off' all day...."

"Make sure you get to the Doc after your shift and get some medication, ok?"

She nodded. "Yes Sir, will do."

Demeter
D 21, earlier that day

0647

As the family and crew woke and filed for the galley, they found that no breakfast was ready - Gia had been up most of the night with baby Zoe, who had come down with a cold. So they made do with toast or sandwiches and hot coffee and headed for their chores, wishing the baby well.

Buster sat at the table, eyes bloodshot with lack of sleep. They'd had the baby less than 24 hours and already she was sick. He looked straight ahead, his coffee already cold. Maybe thugs, even reformed ones, were not meant to be parents after all...

* * * * *

Ferdie checked on the baby - the third time since 0500. Her temperature was down to 99, which was good, but she was still fussy and refused to eat. Gia sat with her in her arms. Every once in a while, the baby would whimper and sneeze, or would suck weakly on Gia's breast.

Ferdie saw this last and raised an eyebrow in silent question; Gia blushed.

"The doctor suggested it. He said if I put her to my breast, in a few weeks I would be able to feed her, maybe she would still need a bottle as supplement, but still..." she looked at her sister, "there may not be enough formula in the fleet, Ferdie. If... when more babies are born, they'll have to be fed, and some women can't..." She caressed her baby's tiny head, "Besides, it calms her, you know? She was alone for who knows how long... I think she feels safer this way."

Ferdie's eyes stung with unshed tears as she saw the woman her youngest sister had become. Mom, you would be so proud of her!, she thought with a sigh, Our scatterbrained sprite has become an amazing woman, Mom!

Commander Benito Rodrigues
Battlestar Libra Actual
-CIC-

D21 T1100

Reports had come in from Demeter, and now Perseus was reporting flu-like symptoms from some of its crew. The number of infected aboard Libra had risen since the med staff sent the memo.

Rodrigues picked up the handset, "get me a fleet-wide transmission," he said while dialing.

"Fleetwide channel open sir," the operator said.

"Attention all ship Captains, there seems to be a disease outbreak on our hands. The type of sickness, and degree of it's severity will soon be determined by the Libra Medical Staff. Due to this, as of right now, 1100 hours, Air Traffic throughout the fleet is being suspended. No ships is allowed to send a shuttle to another without Libra authorization. Any doctors being sent to or from a ship MUST be wearing bio-suits with self sustaining oxygen supplies.

A ship receiving a shuttle with medical staff onboard will be notified by Libra that the shuttle is clean.

REPEAT: As of right now fleet-wide air traffic is suspended."

Rodrigues turned around and thought, "this better not be anything too serious."

Day 21
1124 CUT,
Perseus

Dr. Sarah Vaillant had just been arriving on Perseus for yet another therapy session when the Quarantine had been declared, so she was stuck there now. She had immediately offered her help to Doc Walters, and seeing his infirmary still filled with wounded, the elderly doctor readily agreed.
Because of that, Cole and Sarah had agreed on meeting in the Infirmary for their therapy session, since Sarah had insisted on having several pieces of medical equipment ready should something go wrong.

What exactly COULD go wrong?Cole mused once again, All I do is open both eyes at once....I have o problems seeing with my left eye, I have no problems seeing with my right eye....why should I have problems seeing with both of 'em at once?Cole thought, sitting on a more than uncomfortable plastic chair in Sarah's new office.

And this chair is going to kill me...I think I will have to play the CO-card later and have all these chairs thrown out of an airlock...

"OK Richard, the left eye first, so close the right one and take of the eye patch!" Sarah told him from across the little office she had occupied, still readying some electronical devices.

Cole did as he was told and for a moment, experienced the most strangest thing, like always, his eye seemed to take a moment to adapt to everything, and for that moment, his perception was warped, especially concerning colors. Since he'd been looking at Sarah when he opened the eye, all he saw was her, still clad in a labcoat and with dark slacks and a blue blouse underneath but with glowing red eyes instead of her usual dark brown orbs.
But this lasted only a moment, and like always, Cole did't think about it any longer. Instead he waited for Sarah to come over.

She came and stood in front of him, taking one of his hands in hers while the other was holding the little device again that was used for calibrating the new eye.

"Good, and now, open the other eye. It will be confusing for a moment, you might feel nauseous at first because your eyes use a different system of 'encoding' what you see and your brain hasn't adapted to that....but it will, I promise. Ready?"

"As ready as I'll ever be...."

When he opened the other eye, he almost fell, but surprisingly strong arms seemed to hold him upright. All he could see was a whirlwind of colours and forms, nothing discernible that he could focus on but yet, behind some kind of mulit-colored fog there seemed to be shilhouettes that he had a feeling were something very important. But everytime he tried to focus on something, it was gone....

It took an eternity, at least for Cole, until the fog began to lift and finally he could at least see a silhouette just in front of him.

"That better Richard?" Sarah's voice seemed to cut right through the fog and Cole was surprised at the intensity of feelings that alone hearing her voice was raising inside him.

"Yeah, but still only silhouettes, the colors are off again...." His voice was croaking, as if he hadn't drunk something for several days.

Sarah was still concentrating on her little gadget, and slowly, the image Cole was seeing grew sharper and the colors finally became better, until he could see her right in Front of him...

"You are so beautiful...." he whispered.
